The Christmas traditions in Alsace — a living heritage

Advent candles, decorated wreaths, bredele biscuits, Christmas trees, and Saint Nicholas

Christmas traditions in Alsace are full of symbols and stories passed down from generation to generation. They form part of the region’s cultural identity and give every visit a deeply human and festive dimension.

Everywhere, the same spirit of sharing and conviviality comes alive: villages glow with lights, families gather together, and ancestral skills are passed on — turning Advent into a time of emotion and authenticity.

Step off the beaten path

You may already know Alsace’s major Christmas markets…

But the region is also full of hidden gems where the magic is lived at the pace of the locals.
Here, no crowds or identical stalls: each town and village cultivates its own Christmas spirit, rooted in local history and craftsmanship.

From Mulhouse — the textile city adorned each year with a sumptuous Christmas fabric designed by local artists — to Sélestat, birthplace of the Christmas tree and guardian of this centuries-old tradition, every atmosphere is unique. Guebwiller charms with the soft hues of its Blue Christmas market; Haguenau enchants with its fairy-tale lights; Munster radiates a warm mountain spirit; and Neuf-Brisach, Vauban’s UNESCO-listed fortress town, brings to life the Christmases of yesteryear through artisans and storytellers.

In Northern Alsace, from Wissembourg to Betschdorf, villages celebrate an authentic Christmas blending rural traditions, crafts, and shared conviviality.

Further south, in the Sundgau, lights shimmer on half-timbered houses and village squares come alive with nativity scenes, storytelling, and the flavours of winter.

From one end of Alsace to the other, every place reveals its own unique face of the Christmas magic — to experience and to share with your travellers.

Practical information — coach parking and drop-off

Many towns hosting events during the Advent period offer specific arrangements for coach parking and drop-off. These may vary from one destination to another — some require prior booking or charge a fee.

Together with Alsatian tourist offices, we have gathered practical information on these arrangements in a summary document, organised alphabetically by municipality.

We invite you to review it and, if necessary, contact the listed local representatives to reserve or announce your group’s arrival when required.
